Groups.io — Keeping GARS Members Connected

By Dave Bruse, W4DTR (with a little help from ChatGPT)

GARS uses several online services to communicate with members and share information. One of the most important is Groups.io, which provides our email discussion group — often called an email reflector. It gives GARS members an easy way to communicate with the entire group simply by sending and receiving email.

What Is Groups.io?

Groups.io is an online service for email discussion groups. When a member sends a message to the group, it is distributed by email to the other members. You can reply directly from your normal email program, or read and respond to messages on the Groups.io website.

How Does GARS Use It?

GARS uses Groups.io primarily for member-to-member communication. Members can ask technical questions, share amateur radio information, announce activities, request help, or discuss topics of interest to the club.

It is separate from the regular GARS email system used to send newsletters and official club announcements.

How Do I Sign Up?

Joining is free. If you receive a Groups.io invitation from GARS, follow the instructions in the email to accept it and confirm your email address.

Once subscribed, you can choose to receive each message individually, receive a digest, or read messages on the Groups.io website.

Groups.io is an easy way to stay connected with other GARS members between meetings and take advantage of the knowledge and experience within the club.

Pro Tip: Using Multiple Email Addresses with Groups.io

Many of us use more than one email address. For example, you may have joined Groups.io using myname@mydomain.com, but later try to send a message from myname@anotherdomain.com. By default, Groups.io will not recognize the second address as belonging to you.

Fortunately, you can add alternate email addresses as email aliases:

  1. Log in to Groups.io and click your name in the upper-right corner.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Advanced Settings for Email Aliases.
  4. Enter another email address you want to use and click Add Email Alias.
  5. Repeat for any additional email addresses.

Once added, you can send messages to your Groups.io groups from any of those email addresses.
