{"id":2056,"date":"2014-05-15T17:59:42","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T21:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gars.org\/gars\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2017-09-15T19:56:03","modified_gmt":"2017-09-15T23:56:03","slug":"beginners-corner-may-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gars.org\/gars\/beginners-corner-may-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Beginner\u2019s Corner May 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Beginner\u2019s Corner<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By David Harden, KJ4CMY<\/p>\n<p>I have some more information on the Baofeng UV-5R radio to share this month.\u00a0 While looking at ham radios on YouTube, I came across this interesting video:<\/p>\n<h1>Baofeng UV-5R Review and Set-Up<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=56PvtAqacz8\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=56PvtAqacz8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This should give Baofeng owners (or potential owners) a good look on how to set this radio up, which brings up the topic for this month:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Programming your radio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assuming that you have purchased a radio, setting up to talk on it would be the next logical step in getting on the air.\u00a0 You might ask, \u201cHow do I go about finding the frequencies to program ino my new radio?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glad you asked!\u00a0 There are several sources. Perhaps the most popular is the ARRL Repeater Directory.<a href=\"wp-content\/uploads\/Beginners\/repeaterdir.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/Beginners\/repeaterdir.jpg\" alt=\"repeater directory\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This book comes our every couple years, and is perhaps the most comprehensive source for repeater information.\u00a0 This book has just about every repeater on every band in the U.S. and Canada.\u00a0 There is a large edition (shown above), a pocket-sized edition, and an edition on CD-rom.\u00a0 You can get a copy from Ham Radio Outlet, from the ARRL directly, or from just about any ham radio dealer on the web.\u00a0 When I first programmed my new HT, I looked up Georgia and located every repeater that looked like it was close to Atlanta, and entered them all.\u00a0 The nice thing about this repeater directory is that you can find frequencies for anywhere in the country, so when it comes time to travel, you can look up your destination (and cities en-route) and enter them into your radio before you go.<\/p>\n<p>Another great source is the Internet. I looked up one called RepeaterBook.com (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.repeaterbook.com\/\">http:\/\/www.repeaterbook.com\/<\/a>) and found it to be comprehensive. Another site is Artscipub (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artscipub.com\/repeaters\/\">http:\/\/www.artscipub.com\/repeaters\/<\/a>).\u00a0 Also typing something like \u201cGeorgia amateur repeaters\u201d or \u201cAtlanta area repeaters\u201d should yield a wealth of sites.<\/p>\n<p>I have found that looking for club web sites will yield a lot of information. Most amateur radio clubs have repeaters, and they will almost always have their repeater information on their site.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, ask fellow GARS members.\u00a0 It is fair to say that nearly every club member has at least one HT, and would be willing to share their list of repeaters with you.
